Senior Scott Overall and junior Genni Gardner turned in spotlight performances for Butler's track and field squad at the non-scoring Gladstein Invitational hosted by Indiana University on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 26-27. Overall placed runner-up in the men's mile invitational, while Gardner finished second in the women's mile invitational.
Overall, running in his first meet of the indoor season, blazed to a second place finish with a time of 4:01.88. He was just 0.16 seconds behind mile champ Lex Williams of Michigan. Both runners topped the NCAA provisional qualifying time.
Gardner cruised in the women's mile invitational, coming in second with a time of 4:54.01. Collette Liss, who was running unattached, won the event in 4:37.84. Gardner's time broke the previous Butler school record of 4:54.12 for the mile run, set by Mary Reeves in 2003.
Butler also picked up a fifth place finish in the men's 3,000 meter run from senior Andrew Toward, who finished the race in 8:22.82. Senior Chad Ware placed 10th in the men's 5,000 meter run in 15:44.11.
Sophomore Jennifer Macke, competing in the women's pentathlon placed fourth in the high jump (1.58 m) and seventh in the 800 (2:33.46). Junior Kristi Hertzler, also competing in the pentathlon, was seventh in the 60 meter dash (9.46).
