Butler's Scott Overall Named Horizon League Athlete of the Week
Feb. 7, 2006
Senior Scott Overall, who posted the fifth-fastest 3,000 meter time in the nation this season, has been named Horizon League Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week. He's the second member of the Butler men's track team to earn the honor this year, joining teammate Steven Murphy who was chosen on Jan. 24.
Overall placed third in the 3,000 meter run at the Meyo Invitational hosted by Notre Dame. His time of 7:56.58 shattered Butler's school record and was the fifth-best clocking recorded in the nation this year. The previous Butler mark of 7:59.15 was set by Julius Mwangi in 1998.
The 3,000 meter field at the Meyo Invitational was regarded as the most powerful field in the indoor season to this point. Mike Woods of Michigan (7:52.27) narrowly edged Notre Dame All-American Kurt Benninger (7:52.28) to win the competitive race. Overall was close behind in third, beating NCAA indoor 5,000 meter champ Chris Solinsky of Wisconsin.
Overall earned provisional qualification for the NCAA Indoor Championship with his performance. He's also a provisional qualifier in the mile run.
