Butler Sweeps Horizon League Track Honors

Freshman Sarah Kemple and sophomore Chris Smith each turned in a school-record performance at the Meyo Invitational, hosted by the University of Notre Dame, and the two Butler track athletes have been honored by the Horizon League for the their efforts. Kemple was named Horizon League Female Track Athlete of the Week, while Smith was tabbed as the league's Male Track Athlete of the Week for the week of Feb. 7.

Kemple ran the fastest 5,000 meter race in Butler history, while placing fourth in the event at the Meyo Invitational. She finished the race in 17:03.82, breaking the previous Butler indoor record of 17:31, set by Erin Kelly in 1999. Her time also topped the previous Butler outdoor 5,000 meter record of 17::08.46, set by Victoria Mitchell last year.

Smith broke Butler's school mark in the 1,000 meter run with a time of 2:26.96 at the Meyo Invitational. He placed sixth in the race, while topping the previous Butler mark of 2:28, set by Nathan Dosanjh in 2002.

The two Bulldogs are the first Butler track athletes to be honored by the league this season.
