Andrew Sherman Ties Butler's Mile Record

Butler senior Andrew Sherman tied Butler's school record in the mile and earned provisional qualification for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa, on Saturday, Feb. 12. Sherman's performance highlighted a weekend that saw the Bulldogs competing at three different national meets.
Sherman placed runner-up in the mile run in 4:04.20. His mark tied the Butler school record set by Julius Mwangi in 1998. Sherman was 0.06 behind individual champ Ryan Hampton of Missouri, and the two race leaders were among five individuals to beat the provisional qualifying mark.
Three other Butler runners turned in lifetime best efforts at the Iowa State Classic. Senior Tom Frazer placed third in the 3,000 meter run in 8:07.80, while sophomore Chris Smith posted a lifetime best of 4:10.88 in the mile. Sophomore Maggie Mathieson had a lifetime best of 5:06.93 in the mile.
Senior John Frazer had a lifetime best of 14:21.34 in the 5,000 meter run at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. He placed 11th in the men?s championship race.
Freshman Sarah Kemple, who set a Butler 5,000 meter record at the Meyo Invitational on Feb. 5, placed 27th at the trials for the World Junior Cross Country Championships in Vancouver, Wash.
