Track & Field: Weekly Release (February 14, 2002)
THIS WEEK: After four straight weeks of competition, the Bulldogs will take a week off to begin preparation for the Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championship, which will be held at DePaul University in Greencastle on Feb. 23-24.
CANNON IV CLASSIC HIGHLIGHTS:
*Senior Justin Young (Peoria, Ill.) earned provisional qualification for the NCAA Division I Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship by placing third in the 5,000 meter run in 14:04.94 at the Cannon IV Classic. It was a lifetime best time for the Butler All-American, and his effort places him among the top 15 best 5,000 meter performances in the NCAA Division I this spring. Young came in just four seconds behind individual champ Chris Emme of Stanford and trailed Stanford's Louie Luchini in second place by just three seconds.
*Senior Monika Stupian (Veszprem, Hungary) posted in the highest individual finish among Butler's women competitors for the second consecutive meet by placing fourth in the 3,000 meter run in a season-best time of 9:45.45. She was eight seconds shy of provisional qualifier status. Stupian has Butler's best times in both the mile and the 3,000 this spring.
*Freshman Jill Snyder (Temperance, Mich.) cleared 10-0 in the pole vault for the third time in four meets this spring, while placing fifth at the Cannon IV Classic. Snyder is the first female pole vaulter at Butler.
*Freshman Corey Norman (Park Ridge, Ill.) placed ninth in the men's pole vault competition at the Cannon IV Classic with a vault of 12-06.
*Junior Alex Hall (Ft. Wayne) and freshman Kofi Anokwa (Indianapolis) both doubled in the 60 meter dash and the long jump for the Bulldogs at the Cannon IV Classic. Hall covered the 60 in 7.22, while Anokwa was close behind in 7.26. Anokwa then posted a lifetime best in the long jump with a leap of 21-02.5 to best Hall, who jumped 20-05.25.
*Junior Lissa Vogley (Naperville, Ill.) ran the 3,000 meter run for the first time this season and wound up placing eighth in the race in 10:05.80.
