Feb. 16, 2004
Senior Rholonda Ash broke school, meet and track records in the 600 meter run while leading Butler's women's track team at the DePauw Invitational in Greencastle on Saturday (Feb. 14). Her effort highlighted several strong performances by the Butler men's and women's track squads at the DePauw Invitational and the Iowa State Classic.
Ash won the 600 meter run in 1:36.48, finishing nearly two seconds ahead of Jessica Cassell of Indiana. She broke her own school record of 1:37.16, which she set in 2002. Ash also established a new DePauw Invitational mark and set a new DePauw Indoor Tennis and Track Center record.
The victory by Ash was one of three recorded by the Bulldogs at DePauw. Senior Gary Blackman won the 5,000 meter run in a meet record 14:38.94, and junior Olly Laws captured the 3,000 meter run in a meet record 8:37.04. The Bulldogs also picked up a third place finish from junior Chris King in the shot put (46-07.25).
Butler also had a couple of strong performances at the Iowa State Classic. Junior Andrew Sherman finished third in the mile run with a time of 4:05.53, while senior Brad Bennett came in 11th in the 5,000 meter run in 14:31.09.
The Bulldogs will return to Greencastle on Saturday, Feb. 21, to compete in the DePauw Classic.
