Butler's indoor track and field squad had a couple of strong individual performances over the past two weeks. The Bulldogs picked up national television exposure when senior Scott Overall competed in the mile invitational at the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 9, while junior Genni Gardner recorded an individual victory in the 3,000 meter run at the Hoosier Hills Invitational on Feb. 16.
Overall placed fifth in the mile race in 4:01.67 at the Tyson Invitational, hosted by the University of Arkansas. Mark Fountain of Adidas won the race in 3:55.58, while Overall came across in a group of four runners who posted times from 4:01.21 to 4:01.67. The highly-touted race was televised to a national audience two days later on ESPN2.
Gardner's performance at the Hoosier Hills Invitational, hosted by Indiana University, was among several strong efforts by the Bulldogs. She led the pack in the women's 3,000 meter run, crossing the finish line in 9:57.15. Senior Kara Henry, running in the same race, finished eighth in 10:37.07.
Junior Darren Gauson placed third in the men's 3,000 meter run in 8:28.12. Senior Andrew Toward posted a sixth place finish in the men's 5,000 meter run in 15:55.45, while teammate Richard Kay finished seventh in 15:55.76. Freshman Marbeth Shiell, running alone in the women's 5,000 meter run, posted a time of 18:27.67.
