THIS WEEK: Butler, coming off a first place finish in the men's competition at the 2002 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championship, will close out its indoor season at the Alex Wilson Invitational on March 1-2. The two-day meet will be hosted by Notre Dame. Competition begins on Friday at 6 p.m., and continues on Saturday, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
COACHING HONOR: Butler head coach Joe Franklin was named conference men's indoor track and field "Coach of the Year" after leading the Bulldogs to the team title at the Horizon League Indoor Championship. Franklin became just the second coach to earn men's "Coach of the Year' honors in the league, following UW-Milwaukee's Pete Corfeld, who earned the honor the past four years.
Horizon League Meet Highlights: oSenior Justin Young (Peoria, Ill.) captured an individual title in the 5,000 meter run, winning the distance race in 14:27.27. He missed a the conference record in the event by just 0.23 seconds! Young also placed runner-up in the 3,000 meter run in 8:30.47.
oThe Bulldogs swept the top three places in the 1,000 meter run in the men's competition at the Horizon League meet. Senior Nathan Dosanjh (Birmingham, U.K.) won the event in 2:28.76, while senior Richard Vint (Leica, U.K.) and junior Mark Tucker (Geelong, Australia) tied for second with identical times of 2:28.99. Dosanjh also placed runner-up in the 800 meter run (1:54.57), while Vint finished third in the mile (4:11.65) and fourth in the 800 (1:55.30). Tucker was runner-up in the 5,000 meter run (14:29.81) and fourth in the mile run (4:12.06).
oSophomores Trent Elliott (Westerville, Ohio) and Brandon Baker (DeMotte) finished second and third, respectively, in the 60 meter high hurdles. Elliott was second in the prelims with a time of 8.77, before running 8.78 in the finals. Baker ran 8.90 in the prelims and 8.79 in the finals.
oButler's quartet of Nathan Dosanjh, Trent Elliott, Richard Vint and Mark Tucker won the men's distance medley relay in 10:05.68. On the women's side, Amber Gascoigne (Cheddar, U.K.), Kara Lake (Greenwood), Rholonda Ash (Ft. Wayne) and Kelly Moring (Victoria, Australia) placed second, despite bettering the league record with a time of 12:14.50.
oFreshmen Corey Norman (Park Ridge, Ill.) and Jill Snyder (Temperance, Mich.) scored Butler's first-ever Horizon League points in the pole vault. Norman placed third with a vault of 12-6.5, while Snyder cleared 10-6 to also place third.
oFreshman Kaylee Quilling (Plymouth, Wis.) placed runner-up in the high jump with a career-best leap of 5-04.25. It was just her second meet with the Bulldogs.
