Butler Adds Two Outdoor Track Meets
March 27, 2002
Due to the cancellation of two outdoor meets at North Central College (Naperville, IL), Butler University has added two additional outdoor track meets to be held at the Michael A. Carroll Track & Field Stadium on the IUPUI campus in downtown Indianapolis. The Bulldog Qualifier will be held on Saturday, May 11 and the Bulldog Last Chance will be held Friday, May 17.
"Historically, these two meets have attracted a large number of athletes who are attempting to post last chance qualifying marks for the DI, DII, DIII and NAIA national championships. We are looking forward to providing the teams that suddenly have no meet in which to compete a world class venue where they can post some great marks," said meet director Nathan Smurdon.
The North Central College meets were cancelled because the professional soccer team, the Chicago Fire, has scheduled its home games at the North Central stadium while Soldier Field is being renovated. Temporary seating will be placed on essential portions of the track, which will prevent the meets from being held.
The two new meets in Indianapolis will follow an identical format to the Butler Invitational and the Butler Twilight. Field events will start at 1 p.m. and running events will begin at 4:30 p.m.
This brings the number of track and field meets hosted by Butler to nine for the 2002 indoor & outdoor seasons. Butler traditionally hosts the Stan Lyons Open, the Smith Barney Invitational and the Cannon IV Classic during the indoor season. During outdoor season, Butler now has the Butler Invitational, Butler Twilight, Bulldog Qualifier and Bulldog Last Chance meets. These meets are in addition to the indoor and outdoor Horizon League Championships that Butler hosts this year.
"It has been a lot of work this season, but providing athletes with an opportunity to put forth their best marks is what it is all about. Our meet management staff works hard to make this happen every meet we host."
Meet information for all Butler outdoor meets will be posted at www.butlersports.com. Contact Nathan Smurdon (317 940-9233) with any questions.
