California Performances Highlight Busy Weekend For Bulldogs

April 19, 2004

Junior Andrew Sherman posted the second-fastest 1500 meter time in Butler track and field history to highlight a busy weekend that saw the Bulldogs competing in three different track meets in two different states. Butler sent athletes to the Mt. Sac Relays and the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational in California, and the Bulldogs hosted the Indy Relays in Indianapolis.

Sherman placed third in the 1500 meter run at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational in 3:45.81. He missed Butler's school record of 3:44.55, set by Rob Krar in 2000, by just over a second. He did better the NCAA regional qualifying standard.

Also turning in regional qualifying performances in California were senior Gary Blackman (9:03.44) and junior Victoria Mitchell (10:32.39) in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, junior John Frazier (3:47.84) in the 1500 meter run and junior Olly Laws (14:07.87 - Lifetime Best) in the 5,000 meter run. Junior Nick Goodliffe (14:06.40) improved his regional qualifying time in the 5,000 meter run, while junior Thomas Frazier (14:05.71) topped the 5,000 regional qualifying time for the second time this spring. All six athletes recorded their performances at the Mt. Sac Relays.

Sophomore Brooke Carr turned in a lifetime best in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:14.39 at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational. She also ran the 800 at the Mt. Sac Relays, finishing in 2:18.09.

Butler head coach Joe Franklin had three other athletes competing at the Mt. Sac Relays, and all three turned in solid performances. Sophomore Maria Beitel posted a 17:11.75 time in the 5,000 meter run, while sophomore Katie Stuckey finished the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 10:57.77. Senior Mary Reeves was clocked at 4:35.53 in the 1500 meter run.

Senior Eric Michielutti was Butler's busiest athlete at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitation, competing in the shot put, discus and hammer throw. He had a career-best throw of 144-08 in the hammer, and he had a toss of 138-11 in the discus. Michielutti posted a throw of 44-04 in the shot put.

Also drawing double-duty at Pomona-Pitzer was senior Jennifer Sewall, who was clocked at 13.26 in the 100 meter dash and 72.89 in the 400 meter hurdles.

Back in Indianapolis, sophomores Monica Behney and Brandon Cook turned in Butler's best individual finishes with a pair of third place performances. Behney came in third in the 1500 meter run in 4:46.79, while Cook was third in the 100 meter dash in 10.97.. Senior Rholonda Ash placed fourth in the 400 meter dash in 59.32, freshman Kara Henry came in fourth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 11:28.56, freshman Kyle Schoof was fourth in the long jump with a leap of 19-08.25 and junior Rob Hartman finished fourth in the javelin with a throw of 149-03.
