April 20, 2005
Seniors Victoria Mitchell and Andrew Sherman have earned track Athlete of the Week recognition from the Horizon League for the period ending April 19. Mitchell was named Women's Track Co-Athlete of the Week, while Sherman was tabbed as Men's Track Athlete of the Week.
Mitchell ran the fastest collegiate time in the world this year, while placing fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Mt. Sac Relays in California. She finished the race in 10:05.29, breaking the previous Butler record of 10:13.31 that she set a year ago. Her time in the steeplechase topped the NCAA Regional Qualifying standard.
The talented Butler senior shared the league's weekly honor with Joanna Grandas of Detroit, who also qualified for the NCAA Regional with a school-record jump of 40-04.25 in the triple jump at the Bison Outdoor Classic at Bucknell.
Sherman broke the Butler 1500-meter record with a time of 3:44.05 at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational in California. He topped the previous Butler mark of 3:44.55, set by Rob Krar in 2000, and he bettered the NCAA Regional Qualifying standard for the 1500. It was the second consecutive week that Sherman was honored by the Horizon League as Athlete of the Week.
