June 3, 2005

Butler track and field/cross country athletes Victoria Mitchell, Monica Behney and Andrew Sherman have been named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine District V All-Academic Track and Field/Cross Country Team, chosen by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). Mitchell and Behney were among ten athletes named to the women's All-District V team, while Sherman was one of ten male athletes selected. District V represents Division I schools from Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ontario and Manitoba.

Mitchell earned NCAA Division I All-America honors in the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase in 2004, and she's qualified for the national meet again this year. She's run the second-fastest steeplechase time ever for Australia, and she's earned a spot in the World University Games. A graduate student majoring in Education, Mitchell was named the Horizon League's Outstanding Track Performer in 2004, and she was selected as the Horizon League Cross Country Female Athlete of the Year.

Behney, a junior English major, earned first team All-Horizon League honors in 2004. She ran the second-fastest 5,000 meter time ever at Butler during the 2004 cross country season, and she stands third on Butler's all-time cross country performance list. Behney won the 10,000 meter run at the 2004 Horizon League Track and Field Championship with a league record time of 35:45.59. She shared the highest grade point average on the District V All-Academic Team with two other athletes.

Mitchell and Behney helped the Bulldogs to the 2004 Horizon League women's cross country championship and Butler's first appearance in the NCAA Cross Country national meet.

Sherman was a member of the Butler men's cross country team which placed fourth at the 2004 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship. He won the individual championship at the 2004 Horizon League Cross Country meet, and he was named the 2005 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Male Athlete of the Year. A graduate student majoring in education, Sherman is a Butler record-holder in the 800 meter run, and he's Butler's 2004 cross country Most Valuable Runnner.

The three track and field performers join men's tennis player Evan West, women's soccer player Marcie Stucky and men's soccer players Andrew Pancio and Patrick Reilly as 2004-05 District V All-Academic honorees from Butler.

The District V All-Academic team is selected by members of CoSIDA based on both athletic and academic performance. Nominees must be at least a sophomore at their school, have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be starters or key reserves for their team. Athletes chosen for All-District recognition are the nominees for the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team.
