Four Butler Track/Cross Country Athletes Named Academic All-District

Butler distance runners Genni Gardner, Claire Holme, Sam Jacobs and Kent Wories have been named to the 2007-08 ESPN The Magazine District V All-Academic Track/Cross Country Team, selected by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). Each earned first team recognition on the honor squad, chosen from Division I athletes at schools in Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ontario and Manitoba.

Gardner, a senior who boasts a 3.94 grade point average as a communications disorders major, made the District V All-Academic Team for the third time. She was named the Most Outstanding Performer-Running Events at the 2008 Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championship, where she won league titles in both the 1,500 meter run and the 5,000 meter run. She was the Horizon League Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year in 2007 and the Most Outstanding Performer at the 2007 Horizon League Indoor Track Championship. Gardner also was a four-time All-League performer in cross country and qualified for the 2007 NCAA Cross Country Championship.

Holme, who owns a perfect 4.00 GPA as an education major, is an All-League performer in both track and field and cross country. She placed third at the 2008 Horizon League Cross Country Championship, and she won an individual title in the 3,000 meter run at the 2008 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championship. The senior distance ace was a 2008 NCAA Mideast Regional qualifier in the 5,000 meter run.

Jacobs, a senior with 3.70 GPA as an English major, was runner-up at the 2008 Horizon League Cross Country Championship. He earned first team All-Horizon League recognition, and he placed 54th at the 2007 NCAA Great Lakes Regional. He was chosen to the 2007 Horizon League Fall All-Academic Team, and he was selected as a 2007 Josten's Scholar-Athlete.

Wories, a finance major with a 3.96 grade point average, earned All-Horizon League recognition in cross country last fall. He placed fifth at the 2007 Horizon League Cross Country Championship and then finished third in the 5,000 meter run and fourth in the 3,000 meter run at the 2008 Horizon League Indoor Track Championship. The senior runner was chosen to the 2007 Horizon League Fall All-Academic Team, and he was chosen Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Week four times.

To be eligible for Academic All-District consideration, student-athletes must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher on a 4.00 scale, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

Athletes chosen to the Academic All-District team will be placed on the national ballot for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team, which will be announced later this summer.
