Becky Lyne Named Horizon League Track and Field Athlete of the Year
June 20, 2003
Junior Becky Lyne, the fastest female 800 meter runner in Butler University history, has been named the first Horizon League Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Detroit's Matt Groh, who holds league records in the shot put, discus and hammer throw, was tabbed as the Horizon League's Male Track and Field Athlete of the Year. The awards honoring the top track and field athletes in the Horizon League were established this year.
Lyne posted Butler's highest track and field national finish in more than half a century by placing third at the 2003 NCAA Track and Field Championship in Sacramento, Calif. She ran a Butler record time of 2:01.76 in the national finals of the 800 meter run and missed a national title by just 0.60 seconds!
The talented middle distance runner from Sheffield, England, broke Butler's 800 meter record twice during the regular season and then set the school mark a third time while winning the 800 meter run at the NCAA Mideast Regional. She owned the fastest 800 meter time in the nation during the regular season, and her Mideast Regional time of 2:02.66 was the best mark in the country heading into the national meet.
Lyne won the Horizon League 800 meter title at the conference meet, and she was the top collegiate finisher in the 800 meter run at the Mt. Sac Relays (2:03.84) and the Cardinal Invitational (2:03.54).
