Butler University track and field athletes Victoria Mitchell and Scott Overall captured the top Horizon League track and field awards for the 2005 outdoor season. Mitchell was named the 2005 Horizon League Female Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the year for the second consecutive year, while Overall was tabbed as the men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year for the first time by a vote of league track coaches.
Mitchell, a graduate student who hails from Australia, won the 2005 NCAA Division I women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, becoming Butler's first individual national champion in 73 years. She didn't compete in the steeplechase at the league meet, but she did win a conference individual title in the 1500 meter run. A year ago, Mitchell was named the 2004 Horizon League Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year after winning four individual titles at the league championship.
Overall, a junior from London, England, placed 13th in the 1500-meter run at the 2005 NCAA Division I national meet. His time of 3:43.55 at the national meet was the second-fastest 1500 meter time in Butler track history, narrowly missing the school mark of 3:42.76 set by teammate Nick Goodliffe. Overall, who posted a third place finish in the 800 meter run and a fourth place finish in the 1500 meter run at the 2005 Horizon League Championship, placed seventh in the 1500 meter run at the 2005 NCAA Mideast Regional.
