Victoria Mitchell Competes In First Olympic Women's Steeplechase

Aug. 15, 2008

Former Butler All-American Victoria Mitchell was part of history when she competed in the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Mitchell ran in the first heat of the women's steeplechase on Friday, August 15. It was the first women's steeplechase ever to be held at an Olympic Games.

Competing for the Australian Olympic Team, Mitchell placed 13th in her heat with a time of 9:47.88. She did not advance to the finals and wound up 32nd overall out of a field of 51 runners. She was ranked 37th in the field entering the race.

A two-time NCAA track and field All-American, Mitchell won the 2005 NCAA Division I steeplechase national championship while competing at Butler. She was a two-time Horizon League Track and Field Athlete of the Year, and she set Butler records for both the 3,000 steeplechase and the 5,000 meter run.
