Callum Hawkins Earns Regional Honor
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Butler sophomore Callum Hawkins has been named 2011 Men's Athlete of the Year in the Great Lakes Region by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). He's the first Butler athlete to receive the regional award, which has been presented since 2007.
Hawkins, who hails from Glasgow, Scotland, won the Great Lakes Region title with a 30:01 clocking for the 10K race in Toledo, Ohio. He finished seven seconds ahead of 2010 Great Lakes Region Men's Athlete of the Year Eric Finan of Cincinnati. Hawkins, who also won the Horizon League individual championship this fall, became Butler's first region champion since 1998, when Julius Mwangi won the title.
"The regional title, along with this award, is a distinction shared by only nine men nationally," said Butler head coach Matt Roe. "This is a tremendous honor for our program and for Callum."
Hawkins and teammate Ross Clarke will represent Butler at the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Cross Country Championship on Monday, Nov. 21. The national meet will be held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course located at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Ind. The men's championship race will begin at 12:08 p.m. (ET). A live webcast of the championship will be broadcast on NCAA.com.
