PEORIA, ILL. -- Butler's cross country team opened its 2013 season Friday at the Bradley Intercollegiate Meet in a double-dual against Bradley and Chicago State. Despite a shallow roster and sitting a handful of top athletes, Butler brought home two wins, defeating Chicago State 15-40 on the men's side and 15-48 on the women's. Bradley beat both the men and women, 18-40 and 22-39, respectively.
In her debut in a Butler singlet, Katie Good took home the women's three-mile title in a time of 16:32. She finished 13 seconds ahead of Bradley twins Caitlin and Kristen Busch, who shared the runner-up spot in the competition. Senior Kirsty Legg took fifth against Bradley and second against Chicago State, clocking 17:08, while freshman Colleen Weatherford finished her first collegiate three-mile in an impressive time of 17:26. Shelbi Burnett (17:48) and Samantha Turley (18:00) rounded out the top five, giving Butler just three in the top ten against Bradley but five of the top five (as well as 12 of the top 13) against Chicago State.
Despite running only a handful of athletes in the men's competition, Butler had four runners in the top ten against Bradley and all five of the top runners against Chicago State. With only 33 seconds separating the entire team, Harry Ellis clocked 20:01 over four miles, while Chris Kelsey finished in 20:13 and Keigan Culler clocked 20:18. Luke Zygmunt made his cross country debut by finishing the course in 20:26. Kirby Lawson rounded out the scoring with a time of 20:34.
Butler's men will next toe the line at the University of Wisconsin - Parkside Midwest Collegiate Meet on September 14. The women will return on September 20 at the Indiana Intercollegiate Meet in Bloomington, Ind.
