Lauren Wood Earns National Team Berth

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Butler freshman Lauren Wood was one of 30 athletes named to Team USA for the 25th Bupa Great Edinburgh Cross Country race in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Saturday, Jan. 11.  The team was selected by USA Track & Field.

Wood, who completed her first season with the Bulldogs last fall, was one of six junior women selected to the team.  Also chosen were Megan Curham of Warren, N.J., Taylor Manett of Rockford, Mich., Anna Maxwell of Felton, Calif., Alexandra Buchalski of Johns Creek, Ga., and Sarah Disanza of Sussex, N.J.

A native of Lebanon, Ohio, Wood helped to a strong finish to the 2013 NCAA cross country season.  She placed fifth on the team and 18th overall while helping Butler to a third place team finish at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championship, and then she finished third on the squad and 15th overall as the Bulldogs finished runner-up at the 33-team Great Lakes Regional.  She was the third freshman to cross the finish line at the Great Lakes Regional.

Wood closed out her freshman campaign by placing fifth on the team and 88th overall with a time of 21:15.5 at the NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country Championship.  Her effort helped Butler to a third place team finish, the highest cross country finish in school history!

This year will mark the 25th staging of the Great Edinburgh Cross Country race, which has featured some of the world's best athletes since its inception in 1988.  Held in the picturesque surroundings of Holyrood Park, the event features a Men's International 4K race and a mass participation 5K race ahead of the elite races.
