Junior Lennon Wicks and freshman Maria Beitel turned in the top individual finishes for Butler at the Bulldogs' season-opening cross country meet held on the Butler campus course on Saturday, August 31. Butler and Ball State competed in the non-scoring dual meet.
Wicks paced Butler's men on the 6,400 meter course with a third place individual finish in 21:34.92. He came in behind Butler's Brian Dunn (21:12.79), who was competing as an unattached runner, and Ball State's Jesse Davis (21:30.95). Butler senior Chris Carson finished sixth in 22:08.70, followed by junior Phil Yoder in seventh place (22:27.78)and junior Matt Hussman in eighth place (22:29.18). Rounding out Butler's "Top 5" was senior Chris Studer in 10th place (22:35.53).
Other Butler finishers were senior Nick Karas in 11th place (22:39.07), junior Chester Bennett in 15th place (23:32.16), freshman Rick Mick in 16th place (23:55.95), and freshman Nathan Stopps in 17th place (24:49.91).
Beitel, running in her first Butler race, placed seventh in the 5,000 meter race in 19:17.29. Ball State claimed the top six finishes in the women's race, with senior Katie Nowak taking individual honors in 18:15.02.
Freshman Monica Behney was the second Butler runner to cross the finish line, placing eighth in 19:28.37. Butler's remaining runners were freshman Katie Stuckey in 10th place (19:36.34), junior Rholonda Ash in 14th place (20:02.04), freshman Brooke Carr in 16th place (20:47.42), senior Alison VanDerWege in 17th place (21:07.07), junior Danielle Ooten in 18th place (21:45.40), freshman Jessica Froshaug in 19th place (22:34.20) and freshman Sara Guimont in 20th place (24:41.16). Butler senior Bethany Gaskill competed as an unattached runner and finished 13th in 19:56.18.
