Butler's men placed third, while the Bulldogs came in fifth in the women's race at the Great American Legends cross country meet, hosted by Purdue on Friday, Sept. 5. Miami (Ohio) won the men's 8K competition, while Purdue captured the women's 5K race.
Newcomers Kris Gauson and Rob Mullett paced Butler's men in the season-opening race held on the Purdue Varsity Cross Country Course, the same course that will host the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in November. Gauson placed sixth in the competition with a time of 26:17.15, while Mullett was 11th in 26:27.90.
Sophomore Matt Lawder crossed the finish line in 15th place in 26:33.68, while sophomore Madison Roeder placed 17th in 26:36.30. Freshman Graham Fishell rounded out Butler's scoring team in 37th place (30th in the scoring column) with a time of 27:40.81.
Completing Butler's "Top Seven" were junior Taylor Eaton (41st; 28:06.20) and freshman Orion Wenrich (50th; 28:57.60).
Junior Marbeth Shiell paced Butler's women with a 20th place finish in 19:41.08, while junior Sara Bird crossed the finish line in 34th place (25th scoring) in 20:27.79. Freshman Lauren Haberkorn finished 40th (29th scoring) in 20:53.65, junior Whitney Turner was 44th (30th scoring) in 21:00.03 and junior Ashley Dick came in 53rd (32nd scoring) in 21:23.10.
Also finishing for the Bulldogs were sophomore Mary Andorfer (57th; 21:49.65), freshman Laura Weatherford (62nd; 22:20.32), junior Ashley Salt (65th; 22:33.52) and senior Amanda Zolman (67th; 24:14.94).
Pat Sovacool of Miami (Ohio) won the men's race in 25:55.89, while Kristin Phillips of Purdue captured the women's title in 18:20.14.
