Phillip Schwein, Genni Gardner Pace Bulldogs At Butler Opener

Freshman Phillip Schwein won the men's four-mile race and sophomore Genni Gardner placed third in the women's 5,000 meter competition to pace the Bulldogs at the Butler Opener cross country meet, hosted on the Butler campus on Friday, Sept. 2. Marian competed in both the men's and women's races, while Ball State sent a women's team to the non-scoring meet.

Schwein covered the men's course in 21:18 to claim first place. Junior Chad Ware came in fourth with a time of 21:54, while senior Rick Mick was fifth in 22:01.

Gardner topped Butler's women with a time of 18:20, while junior Kara Henry came in fifth with a time of 18:35. Rose Lehe of Ball State won the women's race with a time of 17:43.

Butler head coach Joe Franklin entered only a parital squad in both races.
