Butler cross country coach Joe Franklin unveiled his complete men's and women's teams for the first time this season and both squads turned in a solid performance against some elite competition at the Great American Cross Country Festival in Cary, N.C., on Friday night (Sept. 26). Butler's men finished 13th in a 22-team field, while the Butler women's team placed 13th of 15.
Junior Olly Laws, running his first race for the Bulldogs, paced the Butler men with a 31st place finish. He covered the 8K Race of Champions in 26:26.9. Senior Bart Phariss, also making his Butler debut, finished 53rd in 27:01.4. The top five runners for the Bulldogs were all competing in a Butler uniform for the first time.
Butler's women were led by junior Monika Schneider, who finished 42nd in the women's 5K Race of Champions. She covered the distance in 19:07.7. Senior Mary Reeves came in 66th in 19:52.2, while sophomore Lauren Brentano finished 69th in 19:56.8.
Northern Arizona won the men's race with a team score of 114, while Central Michigan finished second with 122. North Carolina State captured the women's title with a score of 45 points, while North Carolina finished second with 55 points.
