Senior Andy Baker and junior Marbeth Shiell turned in strong individual performances to highlight a busy weekend for Butler's cross country squads. Baker helped lead Butler's men to a 12th place team finish at the NCAA Pre-National Meet, while Shiell paced Butler's women to an 11th place finish at the Bradley Classic.
Baker, running against some of the top individuals in the NCAA Division I, placed 12th at the Pre-National Meet, held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute. He covered the 8K national meet course in 23:53, missing a "Top 10" finish by less than three seconds.
Butler's next four finishers all crossed the finish line within 20 seconds of each other. Junior Rob Mullett placed 80th with a time of 24:46, while senior Tommy Davies came in 99th in 24:54.7. Junior Tom Boardman was 113th in 25:02.8 and junior Justin Roeder placed 126th in 25:06.9. Sophomore Madison Roeder completed the race in 189th place in 25:38.4
Sixth-ranked Alabama won the men's Blue Team race, while #16 Northern Arizona finished runner-up. The Bulldogs placed ahead of #26 Syracuse in 15th place in the 41-team race.
Head coach Matt Roe also entered several runners in the Open Race, with senior Kent Wories leading the way in 56th place in 25:51.9. Sophomore Matt Lawder came in 61st in 26:00.2, junior Steve Lisgo came in 71st in 26:11.8, and junior Andy Barbeau finished 98th in 26.41.9.
Shiell led Butler's women with a "Top 10" individual finish at Bradley on Friday, Oct. 17. She came in ninth overall in 21:54, missing a "Top 5" finish by 11 seconds. Junior Sara Bird finished 27th in 22:36, freshman Bonnie Kaminsky was 54th in 23:08, freshman Lauren Haberkorn came in 65th in 23:25 and sophomore Mary Andorfer placed 85th in 24:14.
