Butler Sweeps Horizon League Cross Country Titles

Senior Victoria Mitchell captured her second consecutive conference cross country individual championship and junior Andy Rayner won his first league crown to lead the Butler men's and women's cross country teams to team titles at the 2005 Horizon League Cross Country Championship on Saturday, Oct. 29. It was the eighth consecutive team championship for Butler's men and the fourth straight title for the Butler women.
Mitchell, who was nursing a sore foot during the prior to the championship, pulled away from two teammates to claim her second individual crown. She covered the 5K course at John Bryan State Park in Yellow Spring, Ohio, in 17:16 to finish nine seconds ahead of sophomore teammate Jenni Pereira. Butler junior Ava Hutchinson crossed the finish line in third place with a time of 17:48.
The Bulldogs had two other runners place among the top ten individuals. Senior Katie Stuckey came in sixth in 18:06, while sophomore Kara Henry finished 10th in 18:13. Sophomore Genni Gardner finished 12th in 18:17, while junior Maria Beitel was 13th, one second behind Gardner.
Butler's women finished with a team score of 22 points, while Loyola finished runner-up with 69 points. UW-Milwaukee was third with 82, followed by UIC (115), Detroit (156), UW-Green Bay (178), Wright State (185), Youngstown State (190) and Cleveland State (215).
The men's race was considerably closer. Butler and Loyola claimed eight of the top ten individual places in the meet, and the Bulldogs edged the Ramblers, 31-36, for the title. UIC finished third with 85 points, followed by UW-Milwaukee (100), Youngstown State (126), Detroit (182), Wright State (188) and UW-Green Bay (193).
Rayner, competing in his first Horizon League Championship, edged Loyola's Sam Romanoski by two seconds for the individual crown. Ranyer finished the 8K race in 24:21. Butler senior Nick Goodliffe, who placed runner-up in the past two league cross country championships, finished third in the individual competition in 24:34.
Butler senior Scott Overall finished fifth in the race in 24:39, while junior Andrew Toward came in seventh in 24:54. Junior Alex Hains turned in a clutch performance for the Bulldogs, placing ahead of Loyola's fifth runner and finishing 15th in 25:20.
Butler's sixth runner was freshman Bryan Phillips, who placed 21st in 25:26, while junior Stephen Murphy came in 24th in 25:51.
Butler head coach Joe Franklin was named both Horizon League Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year and Horizon League Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year, following the meet.
