Genni Gardner, Kent Wories Sweep League Scholar-Athlete of the Week Awards

Sept. 5, 2006

Butler juniors Genni Gardner and Kent Wories turned in strong performances at the season-opening Butler Invitational cross country meet, and the two have been named Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week. The two were chosen from a group of nominees provided by league sports information directors.

Gardner captured the individual title at the five-team meet hosted by Butler. She paced a field of 53 runners with a time of 18:28, finishing 27 seconds ahead the second place runner. Gardner earned CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V recognition a year ago, and she was selected to the Horizon League Academic All-League team. She's an honor student majoring in communications disorders.

Wories placed fourth out of 49 runners in the men's division of the Butler Invitational. He was one of just six runners to complete the race in under 22 minutes, finishing in 21:52. The Butler junior is an honor student majoring in finance. He was named to the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll both semesters last year.

The Horizon League instituted the Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards for this academic year as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives.
