Butler senior Genni Gardner has received a bid to compete in the 2007 NCAA Women's Cross Country Championship in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 19. Gardner earned the spot in the national meet with a ninth place finish at the 2007 Great Lakes Regional Championship.
Gardner will be one of two Butler runners competing at the national championship. Junior Andy Baker earned a spot in the national meet with a third place individual finish at the Great Lakes Regional. Both Butler runners were among 38 individuals awarded berths in the championship.
Gardner, enjoying her best season as a Butler runner, has improved with nearly every outing. A year ago, she placed 26th at the Great Lakes Regional and then notched a "Top 10" finish this year. She improved her personal best time in the 6K from 21:33 last year to 21:03 this season. Her 5K best improved from 18:15 a year ago to 17:14 this fall. She was the runner-up at the 2007 Horizon League Cross Country Championship.
Baker, the reigning Horizon League individual champ, is coming off a strong performance at the Great Lakes Regional. He covered the 10K course in 30:40.81, finishing just two seconds behind reigning All-American and Big Ten Champ Matt Withrow of Wisconsin. Only three runners in the field of more than 200 competitors broke 30:45 for the race.
The 2007 NCAA Cross Country Championships will be held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute. The men's race is scheduled to start at 12 noon, with the women's championnship following at 12:55 p.m. Both races will be broadcast live on CSTV.
