Indianapolis, Ind. - After leading the Bulldogs in wins, innings pitched and strikeouts, freshman right-handed pitcher Mike Hernandez was named to the 2009 Horizon League All-Newcomer Team. The conference office made the announcement on Monday (May 18) afternoon.
Hernandez was just one of two pitchers tabbed to the rookie squad, along with Wright State's Michael Schum.
A native of Crown Point, Ind., Hernandez finished an impressive first collegiate regular season with a team-high three wins, 64 innings pitched and 52 strikeouts. His strikeout total was the seventh-most among conference pitchers, while his 17 walks allowed were the 10th-fewest in the league.
One of the team's strongest pitchers in the second half of the season, he pitched into the seventh inning in five of his six starts, including a stretch of three straight in which he combined for 21 strikeouts and only two walks.
The Bulldogs open up the Horizon League Championship on Tuesday (May 19) when it takes on Youngstown State beginning at 3:00 p.m.
