INDIANAPOLIS – Butler led most of the game, but Cincinnati answered with five runs in the final three innings to pull past the Bulldogs baseball team, 8-3, Tuesday afternoon at Bulldog Park. Junior Luke Duncan went 3-for-4 to lead BU.
The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd when sophomore Nick Hladek doubled and scored and junior Michael Letzter walked and scored. Junior Kevin Crane led off the Butler 4th with a single and would score on a sac fly by junior Jack Krause to give Butler a 3-0 lead.
UC pulled to within 3-1 in the top of the 5th before breaking loose in the 7th inning for three runs. The big blow in that inning was a two-run double by Beach Brooks. Cincinnati would score two more runs in the 8th and two more in the 9th.
Junior Corey Moylan added a 2-for-3 day for the Bulldogs (5-11). Duncan, junior Kyle Waggoner and Krause each had an RBI.
Cincinnati (11-6) ended up with 14 hits, eight coming in the final three innings. Six different Bearcats had two hits.
Freshman Billy Laing started and pitched the first two innings as BU sent six different pitchers to the mound. Laing mowed through 2.0 shutout innings with three strikeouts. Junior David Dennemann added two more scoreless frames. Junior Jared Wagoner took the loss for Butler. Cincinnati’s David Strenge pitched 2.2 shutout innings to pick up the win.
The game was one of five on Butler’s schedule this week. The Bulldogs host Marian Wednesday, March 24 at 4 p.m.
