INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler baseball team exploded for 13 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning en route to a 28-5 blowout win over IPFW Wednesday afternoon at Bulldog Park. The game featured 39 hits and seven multi-run innings.
Twenty-five Bulldog players saw action, including nine pitchers in the nine-inning game. Junior Corey Moylan led Butler with a 4-for-6 day with three doubles, five RBIs and three runs scored. Juniors Kevin Crane and Luke Duncan each drove in three runs. Sophomore Nick Hladek was 3-for-3 with two doubles and a walk and two RBIs before being subbed out. Senior Kyle Schultz, freshman Bob Akin and junior Michael Letzer each added two RBIs.
In all, 12 different Bulldogs had a run driven in.
Trailing 2-0 early, BU sent 18 hitters to the plate and racked up 11 hits and three walks. Leadoff hitter Luke Duncan was one batter away from his third at-bat of the inning. Six of the first seven – and the first four - Bulldogs at the plate got a hit and scored. BU got four hits and two walks the second time through the lineup.5
BU (8-13) added to their 13-2 lead with five runs in the bottom of the 4th. Butler added a pair of runs in the 5th inning and two more in the bottom of the 7th.
Leading 22-3, Butler scored six more runs and sent 10 batters to the plate. IPFW scored two in the top of the 9th to provide the final margin.
Freshman Joel Leichty (1-2) was credited with the win. Everybody pitched one inning for BU.
Butler will return to league play this weekend with a three-game home series against Wright State. Game one is Friday, April 2 at 3 p.m.
