INDIANAPOLIS – Senior Kyle Schultz went 3-for-3 and junior Luke Duncan drove in three runs but the Butler baseball team dropped a 20-7 slugfest to Indiana State at Bulldog Park Tuesday afternoon. The game featured 34 hits and saw 44 players make an appearance.
Schultz led the BU offense with a single in the bottom of the 3rd and 5th innings. He also cracked a double to left-center in the bottom of the 7th and at one point and three of Butler’s four hits. Duncan had a walk and an RBI fielder’s choice before keying a Bulldog rally in the 9th with a two-run single.
Trailing 20-2, the Dawgs rallied for five runs in the 9th behind Duncan’s big RBI hit. Junior Kevin Crane, who went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs on the day, added a two-run single in the inning.
BU (8-17) used seven different pitchers on the day. Starter Chase Byerly (1-1) pitched 4.1 innings and took the loss.
ISU’s Jake Hartley did most of the damage for the Sycamores (18-8). He went 3-for-4 with eight RBIs and two home runs. He hit a two-run shot in the top of the 6th and a grand slam in the 8th. He also had a two-run double in the 9th for Indiana State, which scored multiple runs in each of the last five innings.
Butler travels to UIC for a three-game league series this weekend. The first game is Friday, April 9 at 8 p.m. ET.
