The Butler baseball team will be the No. 5 seed in this week's Horizon League Baseball Championship. BU will open vs. No. 4 seed Valparaiso in the tourney's first game on Wednesday, May 26 at 12 p.m. ET. The six-team tournament will be played in Gary, Ind., at the home of the Gary SouthShore Railcats.
Butler's second game depends on which teams win Wednesday's games. The Bulldogs could either play early or late on Thursday. A Bulldog win (along with the other favorite winning) will set up a night game Thursday evening. Butler could play at noon Eastern on Thursday with an opening loss to Valpo.
The Bulldogs finished the regular season 21-27 (11-13 Horizon League) after sweeping Cleveland State over the weekend. Butler scored 32 runs in the three-game series, including a 22-spot in a blow out victory Friday afternoon. Junior Grant Fillipitch had a walk-off hit to help the Dawgs to a 1-0 win in game two, and the Bulldogs slugged past CSU 9-5 in the finale.
Wright State is the regular season champ and No. 1 seed, followed by Milwaukee and UIC. The tourney's final games will be shown on the Horizon League Network.
SCHOOL HITS RECORD: Junior outfielder Kyle Waggoner set a single-game school record for hits in Friday's 22-8 win over Cleveland State. Waggoner, a native of Brownsburg, Ind., went 6-for-7 with a home run on the day, becoming the first Bulldog player to collect six hits in a game.
SENIOR DAY: Butler honored four seniors - Jamie Feldheiser, Bobby Mosser, Kyle Schultz and Tyler Szymczak - during Saturday's home finale against CSU.
HOME IMPROVEMENT: The Bulldogs finished the season with a 12-11 record at Bulldog Park. Butler's play at home was much improved this season, as the Dawgs had won 14 games at BU in the last two seasons combined.
STAY TUNED FOR MORE: Butler will have five players honored as All-Horizon League when the announcement is made Tuesday afternoon.
