GARY, Ind. - Butler got a strong start from senior Joe Ochs but couldn't solve UIC's Chris Kovacevich in a season-ending 7-0 loss at the Horizon League Baseball Championship. The Bulldogs finish the season 21-29.
Ochs (3-5), making his final appearance in a Bulldog uniform, scattered four hits over 6.1 innings and tallied six strikeouts. But the Bulldogs couldn't get anything going against UIC starter Kovacevich (4-4).
Kovacevich went the distance, scattering seven hits with three strikeouts and no walks. The lefty made it through the game in just 95 pitches, including eight in the 2nd inning and four in the 3rd frame. Butler had trouble stringing together quality at-bats, with BU only having more than four batters come to the plate in just the top of the 9th.
Junior Corey Moylan led the Bulldogs with a 3-for-4 day. He finished the season batting a team-leading .369.
UIC led just 3-0 in a fast-placed pitcher's duel before putting two runs on the board in both the bottom of the 7th and 8th.
The Bulldogs, who won eight more games this season than in 2009 and posted a winning record at home, will return 23 letterwinners next season.
