SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Butler baseball team opened the 2011 season Friday afternoon with a 10-2 loss at Wofford. Senior third baseman Grant Fillipitch led the Bulldogs with a 2-for-4 effort with a double and an RBI.
Fillipitch and senior outfielder Corey Moylan each scored a run for the Bulldogs. Wofford's Tom Dolinak (1-0) pitched 7.0 innings for the win and three Terrier players had two RBIs apiece. Junior right-hander Mike Hernandez (0-1) worked 5.0 innings with five strikeouts and just one walk, but took the loss.
Butler trailed 4-0 when it scored twice in the top of the fourth. With one out Moylan walked then then scored on a double by Fillipitch, who advanced to third base on a throwing error. With two outs junior Nick Hladek smacked a single to left to drive in Fillipitch, cutting the Wofford lead to 4-2.
The Terriers (4-1), who had already played four games this season, answered with one run in the bottom of the fourth. They then added five runs in the next four innings to take control of the contest.
Wofford was led by Clark Wise, who went 4-for-4 with two doubles. Five other Wofford players had two hits each.
The Bulldogs will play a doubleheader Saturday, Feb. 26 at Gardner-Webb. Righties Jared Wagoner and Kyle Kramp will be Saturday's starting pitchers.
