INDIANAPOLIS - The Butler baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader with Valparaiso, clinching a series win over the Crusaders. Butler lost the first game, 12-5, before winning the second game, 14-7.
Butler led 5-4 in the first game before Valpo scored eight runs in the late innings. Leading 6-5, the Crusaders scored six runs in the top of the 9th to provide the final margin. Senior Grant Fillipitch hit a two-run homer in the 3rd senior Michael Letzter had a two-run double in the bottom of the 6th. The Bulldogs committed three errors and managed just five hits as the Crusaders answered BU's Friday win to tie the series.
The Bulldogs rebounded in impressive fashion in the second game, pounding out 16 hits and getting a strong effort from junior right-hander Mike Hernandez. Senior Corey Moylan and junior Mike Hoscheit each had three hits and Letzter hit a three-run home run to highlight the Bulldogs' offense.
BU trailed 4-2 when it struck for nine runs in the bottom of the 4th. Hoscheit led the inning off with a double, and then doubled again as Butler batted around. Thirteen batters went to the plate and the Bulldogs got four doubles and Letzter's homer in the inning.
Butler went on to add three more runs in the bottom of the 5th to extend the lead to 13-6. Moylan doubled and scored, Fillipitch walked and scored and junior Nick Hladek had an RBI single in the inning.
Hernandez (2-3) was strong all day, scattering six hits over 7.0 innings. He struck out five and walked two. Junior Brian Padove worked the final two frames.
Butler (9-10, 1-1 HL) will host Wabash College Wednesday, March 30 and will travel to Milwaukee for a league series next weekend.
