NILES, Ohio - Junior Mike Hoscheit hit three doubles and had seven RBIs and senior Dom Silvestri threw 8.0 strong innings as Butler routed Youngstown State, 15-1, Friday evening. Senior Grant Fillipitch added two doubles and drove in four runs.
Hoscheit finished 3-for-5 for his career night. He had an RBI double in the 5th, a two-run double in the 6th and a three-run double in the 9th. He also had a sac fly in the top of the 3rd.
Hoscheit and the Bulldogs provided plenty of support for Silvestri, who was pitching near his hometown. Silvestri took a shutout into the 9th before the Penguins got on the board. He scattered seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Junior Brian Padove relieved Silvestri and got the final three outs.
Fillipitch finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored in addition to his four RBIs. Senior Luke Duncan went 4-for-4 with a double and scored four runs.
The Bulldogs led 2-0 going into the 5th inning before breaking the game open. An RBI apiece for Fillipitch and Hoscheit and a two-run triple by freshman Zach Sizemore keyed a big inning for Butler and gave the Dawgs a 6-0 lead. Butler scored three each in the 6th and 7th innings to lead 12-0. Hoscheit's three-run double in the 9th gave BU a 15-0 lead before YSU got one in the bottom of the 9th.
YSU was led by Padraic Williams' 2-for-4 effort with an RBI. Four YSU pitchers each gave up at least three runs.
Butler (12-13) and Youngstown State will finish the series with a doubleheader Saturday, April 9 beginning at noon.
