INDIANAPOLIS - Senior Grant Fillipitch went 2-for-4 and Butler trailed just 2-1 in the 8th inning before UIC picked up a 5-1 win against the BU baseball team on Easter afternoon. Senior Jared Wagoner threw 7.0 strong innings but the Bulldogs could not get much against the Flames' pitching.
UIC's Charlie Weinberg (5-4) allowed just one run over 8.0 innings, scattering five Butler hits. Only two Bulldog baserunner reached third base against Weinberg, who struck out four and walked two.
Butler scored its run while trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the 7th, when pinch runner Jack Dillon scored on an RBI ground out by pinch hitter Andrew Eckhardt. The Bulldogs had the tying run on third base in sophomore Patrick Guinane, but the slugging third baseman was stranded.
In the top of the 8th, the Flames (19-16, 9-5 HL) struck for three runs while only getting one hit. Jason Ganek walked and the next batter, Matt Serna, was hit in the arm by a pitch. UIC, still leading 2-1, then bunted to move the runners over, but a throwing error on the play allowed a run to score. The next batter, UIC's Jon Ryan, then smacked an RBI single up the middle to make it 4-1. UIC's third run of the inning came on a sac fly.
Wagoner (4-4) gave a strong starting effort for Butler. The right-hander struck out six and scattered six hits in the tough-luck loss. He only allowed two runs and two walks.
