Butler Loses First Round Tourney Game


DAYTON, Ohio - Valparaiso scored six runs in the bottom of the 5th inning and Valpo's Damon McCormick threw a shutout as the Butler baseball team dropped a 9-0 game to Valpo in the first round of the Horizon League Baseball Championship. Seniors Grant Fillipitch and Corey Moylan each had two hits to lead Butler.

The No. 4 seed Crusaders (23-30) advance to play Thursday, May 26 against top-seeded Wright State, which is also the tourney host. Valparaiso pounded out 19 hits in the game, while McCormick held Butler to seven hits and he only walked one.

Valpo's Chris Manning went 4-for-5 while Robbie Robinson and Andrew Bain each had three hits. Steven Scoby had four RBIs for the Crusaders.

Valparaiso led 3-0 when it struck for the 6-spot in the 5th inning. Scoby hit a two-run triple in the inning, one of seven Valparaiso hits. 

Moylan led Butler with two hits and a stolen base. Sophomore Andrew Eckhardt had a double for Butler's lone extra-base hit. Freshman Jeff Gunter threw a perfect 8th inning in relief for Butler.

The No. 5 seed Bulldogs (23-27-1) will play Thursday, May 26 at 11 a.m. against the loser of No. 3 Milwaukee and No. 6 Youngstown State.
