INDIANAPOLIS - Following a season where it improved its season win total by two victories and won its 1200th all-time game, the Butler baseball team announced its year-end awards.
Senior Michael Letzter, the team's starting catcher and part-time designated hitter, was voted Team MVP, Offensive MVP and Defensive MVP. Senior right-hander Dom Silvestri was tabbed the squad's pitcher of the year. Freshmen Patrick Guinane (Newcomer of the Year) and Marco Caponi (Mental Attitude Award) were also recognized.
Letzter, a Johnsburg, Ill., native, was honored after batting .331 and leading the team in home runs (6), slugging (.511) and RBIs (36). He also scored 33 runs and led BU's everyday players with a .409 on-base percentage. Letzter was one of four Bulldogs named second team All-Horizon League after batting .300 with three home runs in league play.
Silvestri, from Youngstown, Ohio, was named the team's top pitcher after posting a 6-5 record and 4.07 ERA. The team's Friday starter, Silvestri made 13 starts and worked a team-high 86.1 innings. The All-Horizon League right-hander struck out 56 and walked 30 on the year, and was 5-3 with a 3.66 ERA against Horizon League opponents.
Guinane, a Glenview, Ill., native, posted a .402 batting average in 102 at-bats and was named to the Horizon League's all-newcomer squad. He surged into the starting lineup at third base by mid-April and ended up batting .449 in Horizon League play. Guinane, who had 11 multi-hit games over the season't last 41 days, hit .514 (18-for-35) over a 10-game hitting streak in April.
The Bulldogs finished the year 23-28-1 overall and 11-14-1 in Horizon League play.
