YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Junior Pat Gelwicks went 5-for-7 with a home run and a double and the Butler baseball team jumped on Youngstown State's pitching for an 18-5 win on Sunday afternoon. Five other Bulldogs had at least two RBIs in the victory.
The Bulldogs (15-13, 5-4) got five runs in the top of the 1st and effectively ended the game shortly after it started. Penguin starting pitcher Pat Shedlock did not record an out as Butler got out to an early lead.
Leading 5-1 in the 3rd inning, BU hit three doubles to plate two more runs. The Bulldogs scored another run in the top of the 4th on Gelwicks' solo homer to make it an 8-1 lead.
Gelwicks singled twice in the 6th inning as Butler scored six runs on four hits to turn the game into a blowout. He led off the inning with a single then hit a two-run base hit as BU sent 11 batters to the plate. For good measure, the Dawgs scored four times in the top of the 9th.
Senior right-hander Mike Hernandez pitched 6.0 solid innings for the win. He yielded just one earned run on six hits and struck out two. Three Bulldog relievers pitched an inning apiece to shut the door on the Penguins (4-22, 2-7).
Junior Bob Akin went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Risi finished with two hits and two runs driven in. Risi, Haddad, Marcos Calderon and Austin Miller each had two RBIs. YSU was led by Jason Shirley's 3-for-5 effort.
Butler will host Wabash Tuesday, April 3 at 3:30 p.m. The Bulldogs are at Milwaukee next weekend.
