INDIANAPOLIS - Last Sunday, the Butler baseball team scored four runs in the final inning to steal a win from UIC. Three days later, the Bulldogs nearly had another dramatic victory, but fell 4-3 to Xavier on Wednesday afternoon.
Trailing 4-2 in the 9th inning, Butler loaded the bases with one out against Xavier reliever Adam Hall. With slugging first baseman Jimmy Risi due up, XU went to Alex Vice, who got the final two outs of the game. Risi had an RBI groundout before senior Brian Padove came inches away from a game-winning hit, lining out hard to short.
The difference in the game was two Musketeer home runs in the top of the 6th. Selby Chidemo led off the inning with a homer to left. After two outs and a rare catcher's interference call against Butler, Mitch Elliott hit a two-run shot to give Xavier a 4-1 lead.
Butler used eight pitchers, with senior Ryan Salvino starting and going 2.0 innings. Six different BU pitchers contributed a shutout inning. Xavier's Jacob Bodner pitched 5.0 innings to earn the win. He allowed just one run on five hits.
Butler (19-18) has an important league series this weekend at Valparaiso. The Bulldogs took two of three against the Crusaders at Bulldog Park last month. BU enters the weekend two games behind Valpo for second place in the Horizon League.
