CHICAGO - Junior Jimmy Risi homered for the 11th time this season but there was little else on offense as the Butler baseball team lost 5-2 at UIC on Thursday night. Risi leads the Horizon League in home runs with two games left to play.
Risi hit a solo homer down the left-field line with two outs in the top of the 6th inning. He also drew a walk in the 8th. Butler's other run came when junior Radley Haddad singled to lead off the top of the 9th. He came home on a passed ball.
UIC's Joey Begel was efficient in holding down the Bulldogs' bats. Begel pitched 8.0 innings and allowed four hits and two walks to pick up his sixth win.
Begel was just a step ahead of BU starter Dom Silvestri, who pitched into the 7th inning and gave up just three earned runs. Silvestri scattered six hits over 6.1 innings in a tough luck loss. A bright spot in the bullpen was Jordan Goldschmidt, who retired all five batters he faced.
UIC scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the 3rd when Butler committed an infield error and a wild pitch. UIC went up 3-0 in the 5th when Alex Lee doubled and scored. John Coen and Alex De Larosa had RBI singles in the bottom of the 7th inning.
Butler and UIC will play Friday night at 7:05 p.m. ET. The series concludes on Saturday.
