CHICAGO - Junior Pat Gelwicks scored two runs - including the game-winner in the 7th - to lead the Butler baseball team to a 3-2 win at UIC on Saturday afternoon. It was BU's first win at UIC since May 7, 2004.
Senior reliever Jordan Goldschmidt continued his effective pitching in May, retiring 11 of 12 batters faced and earning the win. Goldschmidt finished with a hit and a walk allowed over 3.2 shutout innings. Freshman Eric Stout started for Butler, working 4.1 innings and keeping the Dawgs in the game.
Junior Chase Byerly pitched the bottom of the 9th to earn his 10th save, extending his own Butler single-season record.
Trailing 2-0, Butler got on the board when sophomore Marco Caponi stole home in the top of the 5th. It was the second time this season a Butler player has stolen home. Senior Griffin Richeson swiped home on March 14 vs. Marian. Moments after Caponi stole home, Haddad sent an RBI single to right-center to tie the game 2-2.
Butler finished the regular season with a 22-32 mark (10-20 HL). The Bulldogs will be the No. 5 seed in the 2012 Horizon League Baseball Championship, which will be hosted next week at UIC. BU will play No. 4 seed UIC Wednesday, May 23.
