Appalachian State Rallies Past Butler
BOONE, N.C. - A two-run homer by Brandon Burris keyed a big 7th inning that lifted ASU past the Butler baseball team 8-5 on Sunday. Burris finished 3-for-4 and scored two runs on the day.
Seniors Jimmy Risi and Lucas Calderon each went 2-for-4 and freshman Michael Kseniak, BU's leading hitter, had two RBIs. Butler scored all five of its runs in the top of the 4th. The Bulldogs led 5-4 when Burris' homer keyed the go-ahead inning for the Mountaineers.
Trailing 3-0, Butler got going when the first five batters of the 4th inning reached base. Calderon smacked an RBI single through the right side and Kseniak hit a two-run double down the left-field line. Senior Jack Dillon added an RBI single. Butler was now leading 5-3.
Burris doubled and scored in the bottom of the 5th to pull Appalachian State within 5-4. In the 7th, Josh Zumbrook led off the inning with a double then Burris homered. A few minutes later, Alex Leach doubled and there was a Butler error on the play that resulted in another ASU run.
Appalachian State's bullpen held the lead, with two relievers each throwing a scoreless inning. Rob Marcello earned the save in support of ASU starter Sam Agnew-Weiland.
Senior Kevin Lenkman started and pitched into the 7th for the Bulldogs. He scattered nine hits over 6.1 innings and struck out three.
Butler (2-4) will play one more weekend series in the south, traveling to Lipscomb next weekend March 1-3.
