Butler Loses To Defending National Champ Arizona
TUCSON, Ariz. - Senior Jack Dillon went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Butler baseball team at defending College World Series Champion Arizona on Tuesday.
Dillon, who is leading Butler with a .433 batting average, hit an RBI infield single in the top of the 9th. Sophomore Michael Fries, who reached base on an error, scored on the play.
Arizona (14-5), ranked 20th in Baseball America, scored four times in the bottom of the 1st, all with two outs. The Wildcats went on to add single runs in the 2nd and 3rd to take a 6-0 lead.
That's when the Bulldogs got on the board. After junior Marco Caponi singled, he advanced to third base when Arizona botched a double play. The next Butler batter grounded into a double play, but Caponi scored unearned to get the Dawgs within 6-1.
In the bottom of the 4th, the first three Wildcat batters walked to set the table for a big inning. A single, wild pitch and a two-run triple broke the game open. Arizona ended up plating five runs to take an 11-1 lead. UA led 14-1 when the Dawgs scored in the 9th.
Arizona was led by Brandon Dixon, who went 4-for-5 with a pair of home runs. He drove in five runs and scored three times. Three other Wildcat players each had a pair of RBIs.
Sophomore Kyle Allen pitched 4.2 relief innings and allowed just one earned run. The Bulldogs finished the night with five hits and five errors.
Butler (5-8) and Arizona will play once more on Wednesday, March 13. First pitch is at 3 p.m. ET (1 p.m. local time).
