Stout, Byerly Shut Door On Northern Kentucky

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Pitchers Eric Stout and Chase Byerly combined to hold Northern Kentucky to four hits and one earned run in a 6-2 win for the Butler baseball team on Friday.

Stout, who was Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week last week after beating IPFW 1-0 with a one-hit performance, worked 6.0 innings for the win over NKU. He struck out seven and held the home team to one run on three hits. Byerly then came in for the save, working three innings with just one unearned run allowed.

The Bulldogs (6-9) struck for four runs in the top of the 2nd. The big inning was keyed by a two-run home run by Patrick Guinane. After senior Jimmy Risi led off the inning with a double, the sophomore third baseman homered to left-center. Junior Marco Caponi added an RBI double a few batters later and the Dawgs led 4-0 early.

The lead would grow to 6-0 in the later innings. Sophomore Michael Fries had an RBI single and freshman Mike Kseniak singled and scored on a wild pitch in the top of the 7th.

Guinane finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Junior Marcos Calderon went 3-for-4 with a walk. Kseniak and seniors Jack Dillon and Lucas Calderon each had two hits.

Butler will play Eastern Michigan Saturday, March 16 and then play twice on Sunday afternoon.
