DAYTON, Ohio - Visiting Butler scored seven runs in the middle innings to pull past Dayton 9-4 on Saturday. The win gave the Bulldogs the weekend series and BU will go for a sweep of the Flyers on Sunday.
The seniors in the lineup combined to go 7-for-17 with six runs and six RBIs. Jimmy Risi, Radley Haddad and Jack Dillon each had a 2-for-4 day. Risi hit a home run, walked and scored three runs and drove in three runs.
Each team scored in the 3rd inning for a 1-1 tie. The Bulldogs then had back-to-back innings with three runs to jump to a 7-1 lead. Sophomore Michael Fries doubled to lead off the top of the 4th, followed then by a two-run shot by Risi. It was Risi's sixth home run this season and 19th as a Bulldog. Doubles by Lucas Calderon and Haddad plated another run and BU led 4-1.
Butler took advantage of two Dayton errors in the top of the 5th to score three more times. Freshman Mike Kseniak, who entered the game as Butler's leading hitter, smacked an RBI single to center in the inning.
Risi and Kseniak singled to lead off the 9th, and both scored on a two-run single by Haddad. The Butler catcher is 6-for-8 with four RBIs against the Flyers. Butler has 31 hits in the first two games against Dayton, including 18 hits on Friday.
Ryan Berry, who homered Friday, had a two-run double in the 6th for Dayton, which has lost eight straight games. The Flyers are 7-23-1 just one year after winning the A-10 and advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
The Bulldogs and Flyers will conclude their series Sunday. Billy Laing will take the mound against UD's Charlie Dant.
