BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Butler baseball team had a 2-0 lead early, but the pitching staff for the 19th-ranked Indiana Hoosiers buckled down in a 5-2 Butler loss on Saturday.
The Bulldogs (17-17) jumped out to a 2-0 lead, as junior Marcos Calderon led off the game with a single and later scored on a fielder's choice. Freshman Mike Kseniak doubled in the inning. Senior Jack Dillon later scored on a delayed steal to make BU's lead 2-0.
The Dawgs wouldn't score again and only managed three more hits the rest of the day. No Butler baserunners reached third base as IU's Kyle Hart improved to 6-0 with a win. He allowed four hits over 6.0 innings and struck out six. Two IU relievers combined for three shutout innings to finish the day.
Butler did do a good job of keeping Indiana (28-8) out of the big inning until the middle of the game. With the game tied 2-2, a hit IU batter and a Butler error led to three runs in the bottom of the 5th. Scott Donley, who went 4-for-4 on Friday, had a bases-loaded walk to start the scoring. An error with the bases loaded resulted in another run and a safe call at second base scored the third run. IU led 5-2 and would hold that lead.
Sophomore righty Kyle Allen started and gave a good start, pitching 5.0 innings and holding IU to three earned runs. Junior Gunner Johnson pitched three shutout innings and only allowed two baserunners.
Kseniak and senior Radley Haddad each had two hits for Butler. Both teams had six hits on the night, as the Bulldogs competed much better than their 12-2 loss on Friday.
BU and IU will finish their three-game set at Bulldog Park Sunday, April 21. Senior Billy Laing will start against Indiana's Aaron Slegers.
