Charlotte Pitching Holds Down Butler
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte held the Butler baseball team to seven hits during a doubleheader on Saturday. The 49ers won 4-2 and 5-0 to complete a weekend sweep.
Brock Hudgens threw a complete-game one-hitter in the second game, striking out seven but walking six. Hudgens moved to 6-0 on the season with the win.
His outing came right after John Hamilton pitched 8.0 innings against BU and allowed just one earned run. Hamilton struck out five and scattered four hits. Jason Harris retired the final batter of the game to earn his first save.
In game one, Charlotte took a 3-0 lead in the 3rd and it could've been 4-0 when JJ Elsener singled and Grant Dunnegan rounded third base. Junior Marcos Calderon threw him out from center field to keep the 49er lead to three runs.
A pair of Charlotte errors led to pinch runner James Baker scoring in the top of the 7th. Charlotte answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning to lead 4-1. Junior Marco Caponi had an RBI single in the 9th before the 49ers finished the game.
Hudgens controlled the nightcap, allowing just a double by senior Radley Haddad in the top of the 2nd. An error by Butler allowed a pair of runs in the bottom of the 2nd. BU went down 5-0 in a 3rd inning that saw four walks and a hit batter.
Trailing 5-0, relievers Will Schierholz and Chase Byerly pitched 5.2 shutout innings. Schierholz went 3.2 frames and allowed just two hits and a walk. Byerly pitched the 7th and 8th innings and gave up just a pair of hits.
For the day, Caponi and senior Jack Dillon led Butler with two hits each.
Butler (23-21, 10-8) will play at IPFW Wednesday, May 8 before hosting Rhode Island in a three-game series next weekend.
