FORT WAYNE, Ind. - IPFW held the Butler baseball team to three hits in a 4-1 win over the Bulldogs on Wednesday. Twenty-one players saw action for the Dawgs.
Butler (23-22) had three hits and committed three errors in its second-to-last non-league game of the season. Six pitchers took the mound for Butler, which is one game out of the final A-10 tourney spot with six games to play.
Two hit batters, a walk and an infield error helped the Mastodons (21-23) to a pair of runs in the bottom of the 2nd for a 2-0 lead. An RBI single by junior Marco Caponi drove in senior Lucas Calderon in the top of the 2nd to make it 2-1. IPFW answered with another unearned run in the bottom of the 2nd to lead 3-1.
A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 3rd gave IPFW a 4-1 lead. Both pitching staffs would hold the rest of the day. Four different Bulldog relievers - Joel Leichty, Jared Earle, Kyle Allen and Gunner Johnson - combined to pitch 4.0 shutout innings and hold IPFW to two hits.
Brandon Soat, Kevin Wirth and Lucas Salerno each had two hits for IPFW. Nate White (2-0) was the winning pitcher, allowing just one run over 6.0 innings with six strikeouts.
Butler returns to Atlantic 10 action this weekend with a three-game set vs. Rhode Island. Sophomore Eric Stout will start Friday opposite URI's right-hander Mike Bradstreet.
